Thembalitsha

Tim and Maz Walker and their teenage son Arron left the UK in 2008 to live among those infected with Aids and TB in the township of Grabouw, a short drive out of beautiful and prosperous Cape Town in South Africa. Working closely with the charity Thembalitsha, they have set up 'The Village of Hope' to take babies who are HIV positive, but whose condition has been stabilised with medication, before these children can be fostered back into the community.

They opened their baby unit in March 2009, and immediately relieved the bottleneck created by these 'healthy children' taking up specialist care places in the 18-bed Themba Care clinic, which is now able to accept new, sick babies.

They are also involved in setting up football teams, helping with schools work and developing job opportunities with mums in the wider community.

Over 5.6 million people live with Aids in South Africa, the highest percentage rate in the world. A whole generation of 20-40 years has been wiped out in that nation. Poverty, superstition and a lack of proper education make the Walker's work particularly challenging.
